Background of the Study
Social media platforms have become epicenters for linguistic innovation, with Twitter serving as a microcosm of broader language evolution in Nigeria. This study focuses on Twitter trends as a lens through which changes in language use, structure, and innovation can be observed. Nigerian Twitter users actively generate and circulate novel expressions, abbreviations, and stylistic conventions that reflect both global influences and indigenous linguistic traditions (Chukwu, 2023). These trends not only reveal shifts in vocabulary and grammar but also offer insights into how digital communication fosters rapid language change. As users interact through tweets, the constraints of character limits and the immediacy of digital interaction encourage succinct and creative expressions. Consequently, new linguistic phenomena emerge that challenge traditional language norms and foster hybrid language forms (Udo, 2024). The study investigates the mechanisms behind these linguistic shifts, drawing on sociolinguistic theories to understand the convergence of digital media and language evolution. This research is timely as it captures the dynamic interplay between technology and language, highlighting the role of digital platforms in shaping contemporary linguistic practices (Ifeanyi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
There is a growing interest in social media’s role in language evolution; however, the specific impact of Twitter trends on Nigerian language remains underexplored. Although anecdotal evidence suggests that Twitter is a major driver of linguistic change, systematic empirical studies are lacking. The rapid dissemination of neologisms and creative language use on Twitter presents challenges to conventional linguistic models and raises questions about the sustainability of these changes. This study aims to address the gap by providing an in-depth analysis of Twitter-induced language evolution in Nigeria. Without such research, it is difficult to understand the broader implications for language policy and education in the digital age, thereby necessitating a focused investigation into Twitter trends and their linguistic impact (Amadi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the evolution of language patterns on Nigerian Twitter.

  2. To identify key trends and innovations in Twitter-induced language change.

  3. To assess the implications of these changes for traditional language use.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the predominant linguistic trends observed on Nigerian Twitter?

  2. How do Twitter trends influence traditional language practices?

  3. What are the broader implications of these linguistic innovations for Nigerian language evolution?

Significance of the Study
This research is significant as it provides empirical insights into how Twitter drives language evolution in Nigeria. It informs both linguistic theory and practical applications in education and media studies. By capturing emerging language trends, the study helps educators, linguists, and policy makers to understand and respond to the challenges of digital communication. The findings highlight the transformative impact of social media on language and underscore the need for updated linguistic frameworks that accommodate digital innovation (Eze, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Twitter Trends: Popular topics and expressions circulating on Twitter.

  2. Language Evolution: The process by which language changes over time.

  3. Neologism: A newly coined word or expression.
